QED Simplicity

Solves Problems and Delivers Sustainable Results

International Development

These are a few of the development projects I have worked on over the years in between my entrepreneurial and private sector careers:

  • Departmental Honours thesis on International Aid to Zambia.

In 1990, while studying International Business and Political Science, I wrote a departmental honours thesis on the international aid to Zambia. I covered the major multilateral, bilateral and non-state NGOs active in Zambia and the challenges and opportunities they faced.

  • Project Manager, Sida/SAREC, Sri Lanka.

In 2003/4 I managed and assessed the multi-year Sida/SAREC cooperation program with seven universities in Sri Lanka. I identified problem areas and suggested solutions to Sida. I began implementation of several remedial measures and then handed over the projects to the new project manager. I made recommendations for policy and process changes, some of which were subsequently adopted by the Swedish National Audit Office.

  • Fresh Start food cooperative, Sri Lanka.

In the aftermath of the tsunami, I helped Women in Need and Swisscontact to set up a food production cooperative to give skills and income to abused women and tsunami widows. Along with local organizers, I developed the business plan, recruited the cooperative manager and found co-funding partner NGOs.

  • Office of the President, Tsunami CNO, Sri Lanka.

I volunteered as a coordinator of bilateral aid in the Centre for National Operations in the weeks immediately following the 2004 tsunami. We tried to coordinate the many bilateral efforts and keep them in line with the Sri Lankan government and UN priorities and activities.

  • SME management training, Skopje, Macedonia.

Conducted a training needs analysis, designed a course and all course materials, conducted the training course for new surveyor entrepreneurs in Macedonia for Sida and the World Bank.
